Helping Schools Embrace Neurodiversity: A Journey to Support Educators
Are you interested in starting a neurodiverse school—or strengthening neurodiversity practices within your current public school? Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Shelley Carnes to discuss AffirmEd, a newly launched initiative from The Hirsch Academy that is designed to do exactly that.
So, what is AffirmEd?
AffirmEd is a neurodiversity-affirming educational consultation and support program developed by The Hirsch Academy, a K–8 school in Atlanta with over 20 years of experience supporting neurodivergent learners. The program is rooted in the belief that students thrive when educational environments honor diverse ways of thinking, learning, and being.
AffirmEd supports schools, educators, families, and educational innovators in designing learning environments and practices that genuinely meet the needs of neurodivergent students. Rather than pushing learners to conform to “typical” norms, the program emphasizes strength-based approaches, meaningful connection, autonomy, regulation, and joyful learning.
What AffirmEd Offers
Participants in the AffirmEd program gain access to:
Coaching and professional development for teachers and school leaders
Cohort-based learning and shared professional experiences
Workshops focused on neurodiversity awareness, classroom community building, and inclusive instructional practices
Ongoing support and evaluation to help schools implement and sustain meaningful change in real-world settings
In short, AffirmEd helps create educational spaces where neurodivergent students are supported to thrive—not just fit in.
Perhaps most exciting, AffirmEd is completely FREE for applicants who are starting a neurodiverse school or for public schools seeking to create more neurodiversity-affirming classrooms. Each year, one recipient is selected to receive this prestigious opportunity.
📅 Applications are due by March 1, 2026 (select link).
If you are passionate about building more inclusive, affirming learning environments, don’t miss this opportunity. Apply today and be part of the movement to transform education for neurodivergent learners.
